Seventeen Newhouse School students were enlisted to be part of the photography and communications teams for the 2023 FISU Winter World University Games in Lake Placid, New York. This marked only the second occasion the international winter sports competition for college athletes was hosted in the United States.
The Newhouse team comprised of students majoring in photography, public relations, television, radio, and film, were tasked with both covering and promoting the games. The games featured over 1,400 athletes competing in various sports, including ice hockey, figure skating, and alpine skiing, with teams from 46 countries, such as Canada, Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Sweden, Ukraine and United States.
Faculty members Seth Gitner, Jon Glass, and Brad Horn accompanied the students on this endeavor.
The FISU World University Games is the world’s largest multi-sport event for collegiate athletes, ages 17-25. The 11-day Lake Placid 2023 FISU Games featured 1,443 collegiate athletes from 540 universities across 46 countries. The competition consisted of 12 winter sports and 85 medal events, contested throughout New York state’s Adirondack region, including Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Wilmington, North Creek, Canton, and Potsdam.
